How to Press Flowers

How to Press Flowers

Step 1.)  Pick your favorite flowers and leaves while they are at their peaks in color and unwilted.  Picking midday is smart since flowers are at their driest, and immediately get them into your presses to avoid wilting.

Step 2.)  Layer your press as it came:  cardboard, blotter paper, 100% cotton paper, flowers, 100% cotton paper, blotter paper, cardboard, and so on until your flowers fill the press.  But, make sure you do step 3 before putting the second piece of paper on.

Step 3.)  Design your layout of flowers on your paper.  Make sure that there is minimal overlapping of leaves, petals, stems, etc.  Carefully flatten them, face down, as you want them to look when you are finished.

Step 4.)  Color retention will be greatly improved if you put the flowers between sheets of paper and then change the paper every couple of days.  The flowers may turn brown if they don’t dry quickly enough.

Step 5.)  Check and tighten the flower press daily if air drying.

Step 6.)  Keep the press in a warm, dry place as the flowers dry. Drying time will vary depending upon temperature and humidity. Most small flowers will be dry in about a week. Pansies may require ten days. The larger the flower the longer the drying time.  For instance, daisies take about 3 weeks, with changing the paper once a week.  Flowers are dry when they are stiff and crisp throughout. Partially dry flowers feel cold to the touch. Don’t remove the flowers from the press until they are completely dry. Partly dried flowers will shrink and pucker up.

Step 7.)  Once the flowers are pressed and dry you can use them in arrangements, art work, as gifts, or whatever you like.  Good Luck!
